Paris is perhaps one of the most romantic cities in all of Europe. It is certainly up there in the same league as Venice, Italy. This city should definitely be on everyone’s plan in life and ideally you should give yourself enough time to savor the city and all that it has to offer.
Below is a listing of some of the top sights to see in Paris, France. Now while some may agree with me on the merit of seeing these places I leave your choice to actually visit them up to you.
Notre Dame Cathedral
The first thing to do and see in Paris is the Notre Dame Cathedral. Perhaps one of the most recognized sites in all of Paris this is a great example of the revolutions in architecture and art at that time.
Champs Elysees & Arc de Triomphe
The famous street of the Champs Elysees which ends in the enduring symbol of Napolean known as the Arc de Triomphe is perhaps one of the best known streets in the world. Today however you are inundated with sounds of traffic and the smells of all the restaurants that line the street.
Les Invalides
The Les Invalides is actually a complex of buildings which are momuments to the wars of times past. Notably Napolean is buried here and for the history buffs out there this is certainly a sight to see. Not only will you get an idea on how modern day Europe was formed through the battles over time but you will certainly see some of the best examples of art and architecture on your way.
Musee d’Orsay
Fans of impressionism will certainly love to visit the Musee d’Orsay as this has one of the larger collections of this time period stored within its walls. Here you can see some of the best examples of art from artists such as Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh and Manet among many others.
The Louvre
Certainly one of the most famous art museums in Paris if not the entire world the Louvre is the largest collection of art mankind has ever seen. Of course you cannot see all of this in one day and if you do plan on visiting this museum have a plan of action. The reason you want to plan your visit is that this is a very crowded place with many tourists all striving to see the same thing.
Musée de l’Orangerie
This is another art gallery of impressionist works that contains many fine examples from Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso among many others.
Catacombs of Paris
The Catacombs of Paris is perhaps one of the most famous burial centers in France. These catacombs were built originally from the mines that were built underneath the city. Perhaps a more ghoulish way to spend your time but with the right tour guide you should have a fun time none the less.
Opéra Garnier
Still known today as the Paris Opera this is one of the finest examples of European opera houses still in existence. Many architects gain inspiration and borrow many of the ideas from this building. The Phantom of the Opera was staged here and this is a very fitting setting.
The Pointe of Île de la Cité
This is not only one of the most famous places to visit in Paris but this is the historical center of the city so all tours should really begin here.
Musée Rodin
This museum was formerly a hotel and now is the center for all things Rodin. Containing an extensive collection of Rodin’s sculptures you will not find a better place to get into the mind of that artist.
Bonus
Paris Double Decker Bus Tour
Now this may seem cliché for many and you may be right but sometimes there is no better way to get the best value for your money then through an organized tour. A Double Decker tour bus is the best way to get a feel for the city and to plan your future visits later on.
Sunset River Cruise on the seine
Now this is one of the most romantic ways to see the city. Make sure you have your girlfriend or wife with you when you take this cruise. Otherwise it will be wasted time if you do this alone.
Now of course I only gave a brief description of each sight because I want to write later on in depth about each place to visit. However if you are just looking for things to do in Paris then this should be a good enough starting point.
